Michael Jackson - 'She's Out of My Life
'She's Out of My Life' was from the 'Off the Wall' album. It's one of MJ's most heartfelt songs and he delivers an outstanding performance. But did you know it was originally written for Old Blue Eyes himself - Frank Sinatra? The song certainly has the smooth crooner feel, but it's hard to imagine Sinatra delivering the same emotional punch.
Aerosmith - I Don't Want to Miss A thing'
The producers for Armageddon wanted a power ballad for their film, and originally Aerosmith were asked to write some music for it. Having just been promoting their latest album, Nine Lives, they were all out of creative juices. Thankfully Diane Warren had written a song called 'I Don't Want To Miss a Thing' - written with a female vocalist in mind. The executives got the band to record a demo and loved Steve Tyler's interpretation so they recorded it for the film.
Blondie - 'Call Me'
Producer Giorgio Moroder wanted Stevie Nicks to help him write and perform a song for the 'American Gigolo' movie. Nicks was unable to work with Moroder due to contractual reasons, but the producer asked Debbie Harry to penn some lyrics to the instrumental track that Moroder had written. The track would go on to become a smash hit for Blondie.
Britney Spears - 'Baby One More Time'
If there was ever one song that you could never imagine being recorded by another artist it's possibly this. TLC were originally offered 'Baby One More Time'. Thankfully they turned it down and pop princess Britney made the track her own.
Olivia Newton - John 'Physical'
Can you imagine the 'Da Ya Think I'm Sexy' singer strutting his stuff to this 1981 smash hit? Well, songwriters Steven Kipner and Terry Shaddick originally wanted Rod Stewart to record the track. Admittedly he would have been a great choice had Olivia Newton-John not pushed to record it instead.
Kelly Clarkson - 'Since You've Been Gone'
This smash hit for Kelly Clarkson was originally written for Pink who turned it down. The song was then passed on to Hillary Duff, who also turned it down as it didn't suit her voice. The nomadic song finally found a forever home with the American Idol star.
Madonna - 'Open Your Heart'
Songwriters Gardner Cole and Peter Rafelson were considering Motown group The Temptations and Cyndi Lauper for their song 'Open Your Heart'. Cyndi never got to hear the demo and The Temptations passed on it, luckily Queen of Pop picked it up, put her stamp on it and the song became a huge hit in 1986.
Tina Turner - 'What's Love Got To Do With It'
'What's Love Got To Do With It' was a massive comeback hit for Tina Turner, but it was very nearly recorded by Cliff Richard, Donna Summer and even Eurovision winners, Bucks Fizz (who did record their own version years later).
Dusty Springfield - 'Son of a Preacher Man'
Another artist with a signature song - Dusty immortalised this song, but the Queen of Soul -
Aretha Franklin was the first choice (she went on to record the song in 1970). The song was also covered by Janice Joplin and Tina Turner but it's very much Dusty's song. The track also featured in the soundtrack to 'Pulp Fiction'.
Ed Sheeran - 'Shape of You'
Although written by Ed, he never intended to record the song. Originally the song was supposed to be recorded by Rhianna. Ed kept the song for himself and it featured on his album 'Divide' and was a number-one hit. Rhi Rhi did record a version though. Which do you prefer?
