“Golden Mountain” is single from theatrical project THE GOLDEN SPIKE, which will premiere on 25th of March. “Golden Mountain” is about the
Transcontinental Railroad and explores issues of industrialization, immigration, and what it means to be called "American.” "Golden Mountain" is the name Chinese workers historically gave to America when they traveled to the west in search of gold in California. The name grew to be a symbol for migrant workers coming from the east. The Lobbyists wrote this song as an anthem for the marginalized dreamers of the past, present, and future.
Filled with vibrant instrumentation, yearning vocals and inspirational lyrics, Golden Mountain is imbued with the spirit of Americana with the sound of traditional British folk music. A perfect example of modern roots music.
Who are The Lobbyists? The Lobbyists are a group of actor-musician-composers who create innovative music and theater. They are both a band and a theater performance and development collective. They take their name from the lobby of The Flea Theater, where the group first started playing and writing music together in 2012. Drawing on folk, roots, and a host of other influences, the band has been noted for their lush harmonies, "marvelous" songwriting (The New York Times), and "impressive musicianship" (Entertainment Weekly). The New Yorker calls their music "terrific," and The Village Voice lauds them as “undeniably talented.” One part band and one part theater company, the group of hybrid actor-musician-composer artists partner with playwrights to create non-traditional musicals.
Their music for SeaWife, a haunted tale of the American whaling trade created with playwright Seth Moore and director Liz Carlson, was nominated for a 2016 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Music in a Musical alongside Steve Martin, Sara Bareilles, Michael John LaChiusa and Andrew Lloyd Webber. They have played some of New York's favorite concert venues, including Joe's Pub, Rockwood Music Hall, 54 Below, Pete's Candy Store, Ars Nova, Mercury Lounge, and more. Their music has been workshopped and developed with NY Stage & Film, Cape Cod Theater Project, Ars Nova, and Rhinebeck Writers’ Retreat. SeaWife was originally produced Off-Broadway by Naked Angels in partnership with the South Street Seaport, and subsequently premiered regionally at Nantucket’s White Heron Theater. Their debut full-length album, Songs from SeaWife, was released January 9th 2017 and is available widely online. Currently, the group is developing a new musical with Don Nguyen called The Golden Spike, about the pursuit for love, family, truth, and the sparkling light of equality under the otherwise dark shadow cast by the Chinese Exclusion Act. The Lobbyists are Tommy Crawford, Eloise Eonnet, Alex Grubbs, Will Turner, Tony Aidan Vo, and Douglas Waterbury-Tieman.
