PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF FOR US WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOU AND YOUR MUSIC AND TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.
Hi, We are Freedivers, an indie rock band based in Barcelona. The band is made up of Erik: bass and vocals, Rafa: guitar, Ferran: guitar and Jordi: drums. Our music is influenced by the 90's Seattle sound, by bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and others. We have released an album "Upside Down" and 6 singles that can be heard on major streaming services. TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE?
Our latest release is called ‘A thousand shadows’ and it talks about the ways in which an unresolved love or relationship can end up haunting you and sort of following you wherever you go. It’s about all of the memories and experiences that you’re somehow forced to leave behind and the stages you go through with it.
WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM OR SINGLE?
Well, as a lot of the lyrics I write, it’s quite personal. In my opinion art in a way is the way to distill your torments and despair, or just your feelings and the internal world in general. It’s all about sharing your story. We first had the chords for it and after a few thoughts, I decided to sing about something that was obsessing me at the time.
CAN YOU SUM UP THE ALBUM IN A FEW WORDS?
It was really something very important for the band, as it marked a milestone in our fledgling career. From the release of this album we started to feel like a real band. WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?
I’m sorry but I struggle a lot to only name one.... I think that throughout my teen years, there were some records that, for different reasons, stuck on me. My Chemical Romance’s ‘’The black parade’’ really impressed me because it was one of the first albums that worked in a way that I had been attracted to all along: like a big story, a tale, and each song is a chapter. I loved the way they took the conceptual album idea and made it unique. Then I would name Patti Smith’s ‘Horses’ and the fusion of spoken poetry and rock, and The Doors’ first album. It opened the doors of a brand new world that was there, waiting to be found. I also love Joy Division’s ‘Unkown pleasures’ and Nirvana’s ‘In Utero’.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER ARTIST?
Without a doubt, "Adolescence" was our first video. We are very proud of it. I think it reflects the situation as we conceive it. WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?
Probably writing or reading... You can also find me watching a movie or going for a daydreaming walk, I guess haha.
DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?
Once I’m on the stage everything feels okay. It is usually before performing that I might have some anxious thoughts about forgetting my lyrics, mainly, even if I wrote them myself.... I might also wonder about how the acoustic and the place will be and if something’s not going to work out as great as I want to. My way of dealing with it is breathing and honestly listening to some appealing music or just singing to myself. HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?
The band was formed at the end of 2019, almost by chance. we were lucky to coincide in the same space of time and place. Although along the way there were some other changes. HOW DO YOU WRITE? - DO YOU HAVE A KEY SONGWRITER, OR DO YOU ALL WORK TOGEHTER?
Most of the songs are written by Rafa and me, first we develop a musical structure and then the melody and lyrics. It is a perhaps unconventional method, I don't know, but it has given us satisfactory results, or so we think... WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
I am inspired by lots of things, essentially beauty and art. I love reading, fantasy, mythology, rock music, alternative music, classical music, poetry, people, nature, philosophy and films... WHAT IS NEXT?
We are currently working on new songs that will soon be released.. and a new video. Stay tuned and check it out! PLEASE TELL US ANY SOCIAL MEDIA LINKS SO WE CAN SHARE.
