PLEASE TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF...
We’re The Haptics, a post-punk band from Vancouver, B.C., Canada. We make our own brand of post-punk, alternative, and punk rock.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE
We recently released “Biodome”, a fun single that’s a bit more pop-y than our usual offerings. We’re got another single coming out January 31st, Ghost, which is a beautiful, melodic contemplation of a relationship gone wrong.
WHICH SONG WOULD YOU SAY SUMS UP YOUR SOUND THE BEST?
My favourite is “Zeroes”, which is sort of a sprawling, dark, melodic song with a punchy end.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO MUSIC?
I (Jin, singer) grew up playing classical piano and singing in school. In my early 20s I started writing music on my keyboard, and then joined a band. The Haptics is my third collaborative band and I maintain my independent projects, as well!
WHAT DOES TYPICAL WRITING AND RECORDING DAY LOOK LIKE?
Cam (guitarist, back-up vocalist) often comes in with a nice riff or whole song he’s been working on, and we jam it out until we shape something we like and that works as a track. Mike (bassist) also writes. Once we have a rough structure hammered out, I add vocal melodies and lyrics.
HOW DID YOU GET YOUR BAND NAME/ STAGE NAME?
I was reading a William Gibson book where he uses the term, “haptic reconnaissance”. I really liked the term “haptic” to describe an experience and we decided to incorporate it into our band name.
WHAT HAS BEEN THAT HARDEST THING ABOUT YOUR MUSIC JOURNEY SO FAR?
The hardest part of being in a band is coordinating everyone’s schedule. Four grown adults with regular jobs… it’s hard to organize times that work for everyone.
WHAT'S BEEN THE EASIEST?
The easiest and most satisfying experience for me is writing lyrics. I write a lot of lyrics in my off time so at practice, I’m able to sort of “turn on” the flow. It’s such a pleasure to work with talented musicians.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WEREN'T MAKING MUSIC?
My day job is being an Art Director for a music label, so that’s pretty much my jam anyway.
WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?
“A closed mouth doesn’t get fed."
WHAT'S NEXT?
We’re releasing “Ghost” on January 31st and playing a couple shows in the next two months - stay tuned to our Insta for the latest!
