Empire of the Sun 'Ask That God' review ' The Australian synth-pop duo create a heady explosion of nostalgia

The first album in eight years by Australian synth-pop duo, Empire of the Sun, is a heady explosion of nostalgia.

The infectious bass of the opening banger ‘Changes’ sucks you into a glorious headspace of endless summers, a euphoria of memories. ‘Cherry Blossom’ continues the party with dreamy vocals and ethereal synth melodies.

The album blends 80s new wave, 90s dance and the big hearted feel of the early 00s. Is it a time warp back to carefree youthful days? But it’s tinged with opting for the future. It’s an album that won’t fail to give you a dopamine hit, even as the album ends there’s no comedown or crash just a blissful feeling that stays.

The midsection is filled with hedonistic wonderment like ‘The Feeling You Get’ while ‘Wild World and ‘Friends I Know’ lean into more mellow introspective tones as the party draws to a close.
