INTERVIEW: VANILLA SUGAR

Based out of Los Angeles, California, Vanilla Sugar continuously pushes the envelope of unprecedented sound. The eclectic sound consists of Jessica Perry (JP Vanilla) on vocals, synthesizer, and guitars. Vanilla Sugar combines comprehensive alternative/electronic sample infused music with an electrifying stage performance to create an experience that is both refreshingly unexpected and addictive.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM

"She" is my newest release. 10 tracks of in your face music with haunting vocals and heavy synths.

HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT THE SONGWRITING PROCESS?

It usually starts with the music. Typically a synth melody. The vocals are added last! Life experiences inspire me. That’s where I get all of my lyrical content from. I know an upsetting situation could make for some great song lyrics that other people could also connect to. Sometimes, I free style what I am singing; sometimes full lines make the cut, sometimes it’s just a phrase that turns the track into a completely different song.

WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM?

I have a lot of pent up aggression from life experiences and let it all out through this album. It's hypnotic and therapeutic.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE TRACK?

I love all the songs so much that it's so very hard to pick. But I would say the song I am jamming the most right now is HeyBoi.

WHO ARE YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCES?

I grew up listening to a lot of Metal, Hard Rock, and Nu metal. I was also really into 90’s Techno! There are a lot of those influences in my music. I find a lot of inspiration in Sleigh Bells, Grimes, KoRn, The Prodigy, & Mindless Self Indulgence.

WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE?

I really love “The End of All Things to Come” by Mudvayne. It was very inspirational to me musically - I love the heaviness of the music and vocal style. Another album that I love a lot is “Follow the Leader” by KoRn. That got me through a lot of tough times growing up.

WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING IF YOU DIDN'T MAKE MUSIC?

If I wasn’t playing music, I would most likely be working somewhere in the medical field. I am actually a CNA (Certified nurse assistants)!

WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO RECORD ONE OF YOUR SONGS, AND WHICH ONE?I would love the opportunity to work with Grimes. I love her style and feel like we would mesh well. I would love to see what she would do with the song, "MakeUpUrMind".

HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?

I originally started writing music on a midi keyboard and iMac in Houston, TX.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ANYONE STARTING OUT?

There are a lot of road blocks on the path to success but you have to remember that this is YOUR dream and what YOU want. Push past it, and don’t give up. You can be successful as long as you put in the work. It’s not easy.

WHAT IS NEXT?

I am getting ready to go on my second leg of the She Tour. April 18 is the kickoff date at Bar Sinister in Hollywood, CA.
