From hip hop to Oasis - gritty and real music inspired by working-class life in Northern England
PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF FOR US WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOU AND YOUR MUSIC AND TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.
We’re Arcadian Haze. The five of us are Tye, Nath, Jamie, Rossy & Gilby. The music is a fusion of styles and influences such as classic indie, hard rock, funk, soul and hip-hop and the songs are representative of life in northern, working-class England.
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE?
‘Love on the Dole’ is our debut three-track EP. The tracks are ‘Love On The Dole’, ‘Don’t Be Evasive’ and ‘Reincarnate’.
WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM OR SINGLE?
The whole 3 tracks are about a very similar subject. About how our past experiences influence day to day life in a small northern working-class town. We wanted to introduce what we’re about and where we’re from to our audience through our music.
CAN YOU SUM UP THE ALBUM IN A FEW WORDS?
Raw, real, revolutionary.
WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?
There have been many records that changed our lives as we’re of different ages and eras so it’s not really fair for me to speak on behalf of the band. ‘Dr Dre’s 2001’ from my own perspective, after being brought up on and devouring guitar music, really opened my eyes to a whole new way of expressing my lyrics.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER ARTIST?
The Masterplan by Oasis because it’s in the theme of L.S Lowry and one of my earliest memories is a replica painting of his, on the wall in the house I grew up in.
WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?
Working to pay the bills like everyone else.
DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?
More apprehension and hoping that everything goes well and people enjoy it, as opposed to being nervous about playing. A positive mindset is essential, but a few beers will help loosen up too. We try to be as prepared as we can be and channel our collective energy into the performance. Every gig is different though so you have to be ready to go with the flow when things don’t go to plan. Sometimes that’s where you find the glory.
HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?
Tye, Jamie & Bartley (our former drummer) were in an old band called A.K.A Pipeline but wanted to go in a different direction after their guitarist wanted to go on to pastures new; so Tye asked Rossi a fellow postman at the time if he fancied a jam and it went from there. Nathan, another postie at the time, persistently told us he was quite the singer/rapper so we called his bluff and asked him to come down, turns out he wasn’t too bad. Gilby was previously in a band with Rossi called Gaia so, knowing how competent he is behind a drum kit, it was only natural he filled the void Bartley left.
HOW DO YOU WRITE? - DO YOU HAVE A KEY SONGWRITER, OR DO YOU ALL WORK TOGETHER?
It is largely a team effort. In our rehearsal space we’ll start jamming on something, could be a riff or a bass line or beat, then we’ll experiment with it, bouncing ideas about. The best ones are usually straight off the top of our heads where everything falls into place, the vocal melody comes and the vibe is just there for the taking. Once we identify the groove and the lyrical concept it's just a case of structuring and knocking it into shape.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Love and life.
WHAT IS NEXT?
We are already planning our next EP for 2021 which will have a different lyrical theme and showcase our evolution as a band. When our freedom is reinstated and we’re released from the grip of this covid pandemic, we will be out there, gigging, making new connections with people and continuing to be inspired by the whole process.
