Hi there! My name is Nick & I play bass in Fake News. We are a melodic punk rock band based in southeast Queensland, Australia. I live on the Gold Coast as do our other 2 guitarists Darren & Mick. Our singer Tim & drummer Nat both hail from the Sunshine Coast. So we are quite spread out but our love of quality punk rock has driven us together to make Fake News.
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE?
We have a new EP coming out in March called “Take Me Away”. There are 2 singles being released from this EP being “Nothing Town & “Rise & Fall” which also has a video clip accompanying it.
WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM OR SINGLE?
Basically just our drive to make new music & release some quality punk rock onto the world.
CAN YOU SUM UP THE ALBUM IN A FEW WORDS?
90’s inspired melodic punk rock
WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?
How can you make me pick just 1! But seeing as you asked I will.
Strung Out – Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues.
This album had it all. Fast drums & guitars with melodic vocals & a hint of metal background behind it. When I first heard this album as a young teen it kicked off my discovery of punk rock music & being the mid 90’s it was everywhere & it was great. For me nothing can top it even to this day & it certainly inspired me to play in a punk band myself.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER
ARTIST?
I hate having to single out 1 song or artist it's always so hard. I don’t necessarily have 1 particular favourite artist or song or video but again seeing as you asked I am going to say
Pennywise – Same Old Story. Classic Clip!
WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU’RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?
Nothing! When is there ever time for anything but music! Well we all have full time jobs & families so that accounts for a lot of our spare time but I love to hit the beach & get in the ocean & just generally get out & about. We live in a fantastic part of the world so you need to get out there & enjoy it.
DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?
Not really nervous as such. Maybe more excited than anything. After playing so many shows it doesn’t really phase me anymore I genuinely love to get on stage to play & see the crowds reaction to our music. Mind you a few drinks does help as well, both for us & the crowd!
HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?
It was back in late 2017 I heard through a friend that Mick was starting a punk band along the lines of Strung Out, Pulley, Pennywise etc so I had to check it out. None of us really knew each other beforehand but we seemed to click straight away & we were playing the kind of music I always wanted to. We had a few different drummers & singers along the way in our quest to find the right sound that the band needed. That is where Tim & Nat came in. The rest is history.
HOW DO YOU WRITE?
Mick & Darren come up with a lot of the initial guitar ideas & we build off that. Once there is a solid riff to build a song around we all add our own pieces to it to get the final result you hear. We like to get a rough recording of it early on in the piece so we can send it out to everyone & they can work on their part, write vocals, drums for it etc. We have learnt to be efficient in this way as we live more than 100KM away from each other we can’t just have a quick jam to work out new material all the time. With technology the way it is now it makes it easy to do this so why wouldn’t you?
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
My other band mates driving me along. Whether it be new songs or just being active in driving the band forward helps kick me into gear to pull my weight & do all the things that are needed to keep a band alive. Also listening to other bands, especially new bands coming out with great new punk rock music does help a lot. There is not enough good quality punk rock coming out these days but there are still plenty of bands out there doing it if you can find them. We want to put ourselves on that same level & be one of the new inspirational punk bands releasing top class new music.
WHAT IS NEXT?
All focus is on the single & EP release at this point but we are already planning beyond that.
We are playing support for A Wilhelm Scream in March which we are all really looking forward to. They are probably the best punk band getting around today if you ask me. After that our focus will be
on the next song we have ready & waiting to record with the aim to release later this year. Another full length album is also on the cards for release in 2024 with a lot of material already written.
Rest assured you will be hearing more from Fake News in the future.
