TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM
The album “As Black As My Heart” may seem new but it was self-released in 2018. In
November 2019 we signed for Froze-Heart, a German label, and in December it was re-released!
The album is a 10 tracks milestone! Each track, plus the cover, are related to artwork,
displayed in a visual graphic form that has been designed and created specifically by
many artists from the Turin panorama (photographers, painters, makeup artists and
comic-book artists,). The record can be categorized as a Rock genre, but with Bluesy influences and Vintage
nuances.
HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT THE SONGWRITING PROCESS?
It has been Recorded between 2016 and 2017 at the "VIP Studio" in Turin, Produced by
The Blacklava plus Matteo "Ciube" Tabacco (Dufresne, Slander) and Francesco Priolo (Be
The Wolf). It's been years of change! the registration started with training and ended with another while recording our bassist left the band, so our guitarist Mark switched to bass and the new solo guitarist became Matteo "Zeta". So the record is a mixture of different people
and ideas and of course changes! Our current guitarist at the time was our sound
engineer! what a mess :)
WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM?
We having spent a lot of time and having made so many changes have been influenced
by more things! At the beginning, it was supposed to be a much quieter record with softer sounds. But the more time passed and with the introduction of the new guitarist, we raised the bar!
WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE TRACK?
Definitely Bones, for its intensity and passion and for its appeal to melancholic
atmospheres!
WHO ARE YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCES?
Karl: I started singing and took singing lessons because Chester's voice had hit me inside!
I still remember that when I was a teenager my friends and I went around the streets of
the small town of Biella at night to scream the songs of Linkin Park. Afterwards, I loved
Chris Cornell's voice in the Audioslave and I stole what I could! It is "funny" and sad to
think that my greatest inspirations are gone and that they have not held the world around!
WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE?
Karlo: Talking about myself there have been multiple records that have changed my life!
but I have to choose the record that convinced me to create my first band was Linkin
Park's Hybrid Theory. Instead, the last record that changed the way I play the guitar is Royal Blood!
WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING IF YOU DIDN'T MAKE MUSIC?
Karl: I think an actor or anything that has to do with art! It is really difficult to think of a
life without music. If I spend time without creating, my mind starts to break my balls.
In fact, in addition to Blacklava, I create other different music and I am a videomaker.
WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO RECORD ONE OF YOUR SONGS, AND WHICH ONE?
Karlo: it will seem an arrogant answer, but I would not want anyone to record our songs! I
prefer to do everything in our house! For me, making music is creating something I need
and hardly anyone else knows what I want! What I can accept and that someone helps me
to record it.
HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?
Karlo: We come from other bands and we already knew each other. I knew Mark because
we had played together at a festival and then we became friends and I knew Fra because
he played in a cool band and then we also became work colleagues. Diego became a
member of Blacklava because he knew the former bass player!
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ANYONE STARTING OUT?
Karlo: Being together for a long time is not easy, it's like having more girlfriends. It's a
relationship you need to take care of. Over the years we have changed two components
and it has not been easy. But we start from the assumption that what moves is having fun
together, being together, having fun and obviously making the band improve and move
forward. In life, there are difficult personal and non-personal moments and sometimes we
have to take a step or two back to respect the decisions of others. We are in excellent
relationships with the two former members of the band, we are friends and perhaps even
if it is always difficult, we always speak with an open heart.
