Q & A: BONNIE & THE GROOVE CATS

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF FOR US WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOU AND YOUR MUSIC AND TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

BONNIE: What started as a classic R’n’R-band almost 7 years ago, became a multicoloured, independent and powerful band. We label our style with a pinch of salt as “Vintage Soul and Roll”. More than 250 shows in Europe, 4 studio-albums, 3 EP’s and several singles, written and produced by myself and my songwriter/producer Hoffi Hofstetter are the result of lot of work and love we put in our little band. In the first place I am BONNIE, a woman that loves music, singing and working with my brother in crime Hoffi Hofstetter. BONNIE is also the name of our band.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE?

BONNIE: Right now, we go for our new single “8000 Miles”, which is written by Hoffi Hofstetter and produced by Rico Horber. This rhythmic and danceable song moves stylishly between Triphop and Pop and can best be described as a love song without the happy ever after. A true rollercoaster of emotions just as real-life itself. Carried by an interchangeable rhythm, groovy guitar and my warm, haunting voice it tells us about the highs and lows of love. The video to the song was made in a planetarium – the right place for 8000 miles or more!

WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM OR SINGLE?

BONNIE: In songwriting we let us inspire by adventures, people, humour, news… by life itself. As “8000 Miles” is an unhappy love song, it must have its origin somewhere far back in my life

CAN YOU SUM UP THE ALBUM IN A FEW WORDS?

BONNIE: “8000 Miles” is an emotional song with a relaxed groove and nice hooks and backings. It sounds like a flowing river – so let flow yourself!!

WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?

BONNIE: That was “Love Tattoo” by Imelda May – as it brought me to start singing.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER ARTIST?

BONNIE: I love the video of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds ft. Kylie Minogue - Where The Wild Roses Grow

…and from us it is the first video we did ever for “Train kept a Rolling”. That was fun!!

WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?

BONNIE: As I am a teacher, I often work for school – and I love to go out for a drink and discuss with friends. But mostly we are in our studio / rehearsal – room, called “Magic Mystery Room”. It is our place of inspiration.

DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?

BONNIE: I am always a bit nervous before the show. But when I go on stage, I forget everything. I love to play shows.

HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?

Bonnie: I met Ueli “Hoffi” Hofstetter 10 years ago, when I worked in an institution for people with a handicap. He showed me some guitar-chords for a daily singing routine. After a while he said: girl – you got talent – so let’s start a band. So we did.

HOW DO YOU WRITE? - DO YOU HAVE A KEY SONGWRITER, OR DO YOU ALL WORK TOGETHER?

Bonnie: Hoffi is my songwriter. He knows me very well and often asks for a vibe or a topic and than he just writes songs. Afterwards, we work on the vocal parts together. In the past we sometimes worked with producers – to mention our work with Rogers Masson who is famous for his cooperation with Vintage Trouble or right now with Rico Horber for “8000 Miles”. But often we do everything ourselves.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

BONNIE: We are inspired by the world we live in and the life we live. You can find inspiration everywhere.

WHAT IS NEXT?

BONNIE: We are working on new material right now. But we also have an EP and a full album in stock. We will sure release new stuff beginning 2022. As it was hard to play live in the last months, we hope to go on the road again as soon as possible.
