Q & A: FOOLS FOR KINGS

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF FOR US WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOU AND YOUR MUSIC AND TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

We are a rock band from Stoke-on-Trent. We combine blues and modern styles of rock drawing influences from our favourite artists such as Royal Blood, Muse and Don Broco.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE?

We recently recorded and released our first EP, essentially four songs that we had been working on for a while that we feel best sums up our blend of wanting to match heavy riffs along with more melodic catchier songs like Glow.

WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM OR SINGLE?

We had been just playing covers for quite some time and wanted to begin writing our own material. We write all our tracks with the aim of making them sound as good as possible when live. The EP explores recurring themes of lies and deceit, not just within relationships but also about the idea of gambling with what you have.

CAN YOU SUM UP THE ALBUM IN A FEW WORDS?

It’s basically the first songs that we ever wrote and so it’s a raw sound playing with imagery inspired from our band name Fools for Kings.

WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?

For our guitarist Jordan, it would have to be Royal Blood’s self-titled album, as the songs on that album inspired him to want to begin writing his own riffs for the band. For the lead singer Kieran, the choice is Technology by Don Broco as he feels it has no weak songs and was his first main introduction to a mix of heavy rock riffs, alongside catchy and melodic tunes. Our drummer Brady always says The Resistance by Muse as it was his first introduction to rock infused with orchestral elements – United States of Eurasia still gives him goosebumps. Our bassist DC Picks Homesick by A Day To Remember. It was an album he bought on a whim but turned out being the gateway into pop-punk and post-hardcore that has shaped the majority of his music taste today.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER ARTIST?

For us, Don Broco set the standard with music videos because of their unique humour- Everybody and Pretty would be personal favourites.

WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU’RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?

Playing other music! Most of us are still at University so you would find us studying this year, but lots of hobbies in between, from football to Dungeons and Dragons.

DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?

Our singer gets more nervous than the rest of us beforehand, probably because we all get to hide behind him! But once he gets into his stride any lingering nerves go away.

HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?

We formed the band after meeting at school, originally just wanting to play cover songs for fun after school.

HOW DO YOU WRITE? - DO YOU HAVE A KEY SONGWRITER, OR DO YOU ALL WORK TOGETHER?

We all contribute to the writing process. We always start with a riff or a melody and then work out from there adding any drum rhythms or solos, ending off the songs with the lyrics as we find this the most challenging part.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

The feeling of listening to music for us is not just our hobby but part of our lives in how we relax and enjoy free time, so I guess an obvious answer but music is the big inspiration and motivation for much of what we do.

WHAT IS NEXT?

Obviously, lockdown is not a good time for any live performances so we’ve been focusing on writing as many new songs and riffs as we can. Hopefully, in the future, we can test out our new material and see how it all goes.
