Q & A: INDIAN STONER DOOM ROCKERS, BEVAR SEA TALK ABOUT 'THE TIMELESS ZONE'

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF FOR US WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOU AND YOUR MUSIC AND TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

Bevar Sea (pronounced as Bevarsi, a Kannada and Telugu (local languages) term for "Bastard") originally called Dirt Bucket is a stoner/doom metal band based in Bangalore, India. Originally it was a bedroom project of Srikanth Panaman and Kaustubh Thirumalai. However, the band formed into a quintet in late 2010 and currently consists of Avinash Ramchander, Michael Talreja, Ganesh Krishnaswamy, Srikanth Panaman and Preran Gulvady.

In 2012 we released our eponymous album ‘Bevar Sea’ which earned us the "Best Emerging Act" at the Rolling Stone Metal Awards India, a slot in the coveted Maryland Deathfest in 2013 and rave reviews worldwide. Mixed and mastered by the legendary Billy Anderson, the album was regarded highly for its 45-min hook-laden stoner/doom experience by fans and quickly garnered the band a firm reputation - in our country and internationally.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE?

In February 2022, we released our 3rd studio album, ‘The Timeless Zone’ which comprises 6 songs and runs for a length of 55 minutes. With the backdrop of the lyrics portraying a tryst with the consciousness of man, storying into travels and visions within the self, the music on this song and over the course of the album pays homage to the glory years of the 70s and 80s hard rock and metal with the typical rifftastic stoner/doom sound the band has embraced on the two albums prior to this.

WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM OR SINGLE?

While we’re founded on the traditional doom sound, we forayed into a more traditional heavy metal sound for this album, sort of the DIO and Tony Martin Era of Black Sabbath and we added other

influences of the bands we love.

CAN YOU SUM UP THE ALBUM IN A FEW WORDS?

It’s a rifftastic bang-on-the-buck sort of album.

WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?

While there are tons of bands we love, we’ll pick Sabbath and Priest’s first 5 albums that kind of made us want to do what we do.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER ARTIST?

We’ve released 4 recent videos to support our new album ‘The Timeless Zone’. Check out our latest video ‘Cadaver Awake’. It’s pretty cool.

WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?

Traveling and hitting the local bars of course, but more importantly taking care of our families.

DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?

I guess everyone does, but that feeling passes 30 seconds into our set.

HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?

The band was formed by Srikanth Panaman in 2008 as a bedroom project called ‘Dirt Bucket’.

HOW DO YOU WRITE? - DO YOU HAVE A KEY SONGWRITER, OR DO YOU ALL WORK TOGETHER?

In terms of the creative process, Srikanth sits down with the riffs, Jack knocks down lyrics as inspired and we all come together and put in our individual style on the leads, bass and overall arrangement. So the songs are forever changing till we’re all satisfied.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Good old 70s and 80s riffs, horror and fictional themes in terms of the writing.

WHAT IS NEXT?

We just dropped our third studio album ‘The Timeless Zone’. We worked our butts off to release this so check it out while you can guys. We’re excited with what we’ve been able to put together. We wanna tour asap, but that plan is still in draft mode. Hopefully, we’ll catch a few or many flights in 2023.
