Q & A: LUNA KISS TALK ABOUT BEING A SUCKER FOR PUNISHMENT, AND HUMMUS!

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF FOR US WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOU AND YOUR MUSIC AND TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

LK: We are Luna Kiss, we are a four piece, rock band from Coventry. We are Wil (guitar/vox), Chris (guitar/backing vox), Tommy (bass guitar/backing vox) and James (drums/beers).

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW EP.

LK: Our new EP is comprised of five new tracks which are all being released as singles, with music videos, throughout 2022.

WHAT INSPIRED THE EP?

LK: We drew inspiration from many different things. Relationships, work, life in general. The underlying theme across all five tracks is primarily being a sucker for punishment… and enjoying it haha. We’ve all experienced situations where you say, “f*** it!” Situations where you know you’re the underdog and your probably gonna get your arse handed to you on a plate but you go in all guns blazing anyway. If it pays off, brilliant. If it doesn’t, well at least we caused some mayhem in the meantime.

CAN YOU SUM UP THE EP IN A FEW WORDS?

LK: Balls to the god damn wall!!!

WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?

Wil: Green Day’s, American idiot. It was the right album at the right time in my teenhood. It made me definitely want to spend the rest of my life chasing rock music.

James: The Wall - Pink Floyd. I remember hearing my Dad play it when I was young and was so interested in it. It’s been my favourite album since I was 15 and still is. Plus it’s the best album to smoke one too…

Chris: I think your early records always affect you the most. For me as a teenager learning guitar, I bought the By The Way album by RHCP and learned every song. It was so much fun I couldn’t believe people did it for a living. It inspired me down the path I now find myself.

Tommy: The Clash - Sandinista. I’ve always been a huge fan of The Clash but Sandinista was a standout album for me. It showed the evolution of British 70’s punk into what became 80’s new wave. A real turning point in popular music in my opinion.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER ARTIST?

Wil: Our latest music video for ‘all on me’. We got to have zombie makeup done…

James: The first music video we did for take her away was my favourite. It was such a freaky night in an abandoned RAF hangar so it was a lot of fun to film.

Chris: Yeah it’s gotta be our latest one All On Me. Acting as zombies all day was so much fun. And I’m really happy with the end result.

Tommy: Talking Heads - Once in a lifetime. The video itself seems extremely retro now however it’s still probably my favourite video of all time. It’s what I see when I close my eyes.

WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?

Wil: DIY, I like to fix things and build stuff. We actually built the set for all our music videos and we all still have our fingers so I’d call that a win.

James: You’ll find me in a kitchen cooking some tasty food.

Chris: You will find me thinking about making music. I may be cooking, I may be watching Netflix but deep down I’m thinking about making music.

Tommy: Either screaming at trees or watching professional wrestling.

DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?

LK: Yeah, of course we get nervous but that’s to be expected. Tommy gets nervous after having a bhuna, just because he knows what’s coming next. We just deal with them the best way we know how… Holding hands sitting round a fire pit singing, “kumbaya.”

HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND

LK: The band was formed roughly twelve, maybe thirteen years ago now by Chris, Wil and James through school and college circles. Ross, the original bassist, he was a friend of Chris’ so he brought him into the fold and boom! There you have the birth of Luna Kiss. Tommy was always lurking in the wings since day one though, like the weird little creature that he is. He shared a house with Chris during Uni’ and joined the band roughly three years ago so anything that goes wrong after that is entirely his fault hahaha.

HOW DO YOU WRITE? - DO YOU HAVE A KEY SONGWRITER, OR DO YOU ALL WORK TOGETHER?

LK: It varies. We all have our stamp on anything we write and we all write our own parts. Usually a Chris Butler riff happens first and we build around that. Once we have a general idea of a verse and a chorus, that’s when we put our heads together and throw lyric ideas back and forth. Wil tends to have a narrative he wants to follow and we all take that and try to write our own ideas either silently with pen and paper or just out loud to each other until we find something that tells the story and fits nice and snug.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

LK: Music inspires music, simple as that. Oh and hummus. Oooooh my god hummus. Do you have any hummus? We could write an entire three disc concept album on hummus for you if you provide the hummus? Hummus?

WHAT IS NEXT?

Chris: Some hummus hopefully?

LK: Within the next week we will begin shooting the music video for our fourth single of 2022, “Something Beautiful.”
