Prog metal band talk man vs machine
PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF FOR US WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOU AND YOUR MUSIC AND TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.
I’m Dasha - a vocalist of progressive metalcore band Next Door To Heaven.
We come from St Petersburg, Russia.
Our previous work that you can also check out is “Dance with me”. It’s a single, followed up by a music video.
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW RELEASE?
Our new EP “Inside” is coming out on March,25. We also prepare physical copies and merchandise. The EP consists of 5 tracks. One of the tracks is featured with Lord Nelson (ex-Stuck Mojo).
WHAT INSPIRED THE RELEASE?
Inspiration is not something that can be explained. Philosophers and artists try to solve the riddle for centuries but they didn’t succeed.
For me, inspiration is something in the air, something predictable.
CAN YOU SUM UP THE ALBUM IN A FEW WORDS?
It is about a conflict between a machine and human, good and bad, about brainwashing. It is also about getting control of your life back. I prefer listeners to decide and have their own impression rather than trying to explain.
WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?
The first album I’ve ever heard consciously when I was 5 - Genesis “Invisible Touch”. I suppose because it’s a great, deep album and the first one I’ve heard on my own. “Invisible Touch” is still one of my favourite songs.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER ARTIST?
There are many great music videos and it depends on a genre but I’ll name the one that came to my mind now - Anberlin - “Unstable”. Out of our videos, I’d say “Dance with me”.
WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?
You would have found me being busy almost all the time. When I have some spare time I can read, go into the woods, visit theaters and concerts.
Forest is a place to relax for me: silence, birds, air, no need to talk to anyone.
Visiting theaters and concerts is ordinary for St Petersburgians as we live in the cultural capital of the country and got used to visiting them since childhood.
DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?
Not that much. I feel a responsibility that’s why I’m trying to check everything on my side beforehand. Sometimes it’s enough, sometimes not.
HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?
We were already experienced musicians. Gene and I met, fell in love, got married and decided to form our own band where we could be ourselves and play/sing what we want to.
HOW DO YOU WRITE? - DO YOU HAVE A KEY SONGWRITER, OR DO YOU ALL WORK TOGETHER?
Normally Gene writes music then I come up with a name of the song and write lyrics. Rarely it’s vice versa.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
People, nature, poetry, death and life.
I love French poetry and poetry of Russian Silver Age. Life and death are always inspiring as they both are essential parts of every human’s life.
WHAT IS NEXT?
We are waiting for the world to get back to normal so that we could travel and play gigs worldwide again. COVID has changed the lives of every human being in a different way and we are passionately eager to make shows after borders and venues reopen. See you soon!
