PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF FOR US WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOU AND
YOUR MUSIC AND TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.
Hi, I’m Terry from the band Clyde. We’re an Indie band from Louisville, KY in the US. A number of
well-known artists are from this city. We’ve been making music for some time. The sound is
somewhere between Gram Parsons and Pavement, I guess. Who knows.
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE?
We just released “Motor On” from the latest release Modern Man. Motor On is a dystopic (with love) take on where we are culturally in the West. We’re on the verge of some type of escalated co-
existence with robots, but we’re still engaged in 100+ year-old cultural battles.
WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM OR SINGLE?
The dichotomy of remarkable technological progress against the loneliest, most anxious, angry culture
that consumes it. To pull back for a second and take it in holistically is WILD. To me, it shows that
the machine is never a substitute for purpose, meaning and community. REAL community…not social
media.
CAN YOU SUM UP THE ALBUM IN A FEW WORDS?
Well written and authentic indie pop.
WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?
Son Volt’s Trace, without a doubt. I grew up with my parent’s old country music and then had my
brother’s 80’s underground/punk influences. Trace was my first record… mine. Not coincidentally, it
mashed up those 2 worlds in some sense. To me, it’s one of the best rock”ish” records ever made.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER
ARTIST?
I love our video for Motor On. As bare bones, from a production standpoint, as you can get, but I love
it.
WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?
Any number of things. Painting, reading, working, unfortunately, running…probably find me at a
standup show as well.
DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?
No, not at all. I feel awkward, but not nervous. It seems like there’s pressure to balance “put on a
show” and being my authentic self. I’ve always chosen the latter. I’m still in search of ways to make
our show an “event” without compromising authenticity.
HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?
I started writing songs and looking for people who could play. I have been so incredibly fortunate to
always play with talented musicians. I’m a hack guitar player who writes songs, so it’s always great to
collaborate with great players. I’ve always been surrounded by exceptional musicians….. fortunate in
that regard.
HOW DO YOU WRITE?
I write the material. On our first EP, way back in the day, Josh (Hawkins) and I collaborated on the
music and arrangement. In fact, I leaned on him heavily for that. Now, I pretty much bring in
complete songs and ask everyone to do their thing. Again, great players make the sound SO much
better.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Someone who is truly a free thinker. Not in the “I get my information from the echo chamber I agree
with” kind of free thinker. Those types are thought aggregators. I am completely drawn to contrarian
takes on any range of topics, so long as it’s authentic.
I’m also, personally, drawn to people with self-awareness. Not insecurity, but self-awareness. I spend
a lot of time trying to observe why I do what I do, why I act and think the way I do….how I treat
others. Self-aware people leave plenty of space for others who, maybe, aren’t as far along a particular
path.
WHAT IS NEXT?
We’re releasing a series of singles with Animal Farm. That is such a killer little label, by the way.
Really good people. I’m also writing a bunch of new material. We play some shows.
