Q & A: STONEBROTHER

Adrenaline-fuelled head-banging from the Nova Scotia trio

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF FOR US WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOU AND YOUR MUSIC AND TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

(Zach) Stonebrother is a hard-hitting, hard-rocking group from the East Coast of Nova Scotia, Canada. Combining the raw energy of 70s punk rock with the shredding solos and thundering bass of Van Halen and Metallica with influences ranging from heavy metal, to grunge to pop, this trio is the adrenaline-fuelled head-banging shot to the serotonin boosters you’ve been looking for.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE?

(Ethan) Every Second Counts is the first thing that we recorded in a professional studio, so it sounds a lot cleaner. The songs are some of our best, including fan favourite Mary Jane.

WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM OR SINGLE?

(Leo) For the most recent EP we’ve done, the inspiration for getting the recording down was mostly “we have five good songs, we have the money to do it. Let’s get a proper recording out to people.” For song content, the inspiration comes more from personal experiences any of us have had.

CAN YOU SUM UP THE ALBUM IN A FEW WORDS?

(Zach) It’s a collection of 5 songs all written about personal experiences from our day to day lives. All the instruments are played live by us, and all music and lyrics are our own.

WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?

(Ethan) Probably American Idiot by Green Day. The way the songs flow together was something completely foreign upon the first listen.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER ARTIST?

(Leo) For music videos, I always loved The Royal Volts’s music video for their song “Til’ It Breaks” . It's goofy with a lot of funny references to the most random things. The storyline follows with the video also never fails to entertain me.

WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?

(Zach) For me it could be any number of things. Practising most likely. If not that working on my truck or writing songs or trying to build up the band.

DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?

(Ethan) Everyone gets a little nervous before a show. There’s a lot of things to consider; crowd size,

how they’ll react, if you’ve practised enough, the list goes on. The best thing you can do is take a few minutes before your set and just sit and breathe. Tell yourself “this will be awesome.” Allow yourself to get psyched, and let the adrenaline flow through you when you hit the stage.

HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?

(Leo) Zach and Ethan formed the band long ago in a far away land called “Clam Harbour.” They’re brothers, they both play music, and like Van Halen. So the natural inclination was to form a rock band with some bass player (not me, don’t know who was the first) and start writing tunes. That was the origins of what’s now Stonebrother.

HOW DO YOU WRITE? - DO YOU HAVE A KEY SONGWRITER, OR DO YOU ALL WORK TOGETHER?

(Zach) It really depends. We’ve written songs in different ways. Usually though Leo shows us a riff idea, and I’ll kind of hum a melody, and then we’ll work it out section by section. We all write the songs though.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

(Ethan) When you’re writing songs you need to take inspiration from everywhere; life experiences, songs you like, books or movies, anything can be inspiring. What matters is what you do with that inspiration.

WHAT IS NEXT?

(Leo) The next logical step for us would be to play some live shows and promote the EP. With covid though that goal doesn’t quite pan out so easily, so our goals have shifted to writing new tunes, and hopefully putting out an album within the next year.
