Q & A: TORIE JOCK

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF FOR US WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOU AND YOUR MUSIC AND TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

Howdy! My name is Torie Jock and I am super excited to be talking with you today! I am twenty years old, and I am a singer, songwriter, actress, dancer, and writer from Western Massachusetts.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE?

My new single, Outta Control, was released worldwide on 07/09/21! The song is off of my new and unreleased album, Damaged Goods, which was co-written by me and Eric Gynan, my manager and the guitar player for Leaving Eden. I was recently signed to Dark Star Records/Sony/Universal Worldwide Distribution!

WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM OR SINGLE?

All of my lyrics are inspired by my life and experiences I’ve had. I truly mean every word I write at the time that I am writing them.

CAN YOU SUM UP THE ALBUM IN A FEW WORDS?

Raw, Feisty, and Meaningful

WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?

Very hard to choose just one! I think if I had to say, it would be, If I Could Turn Back Time: Cher’s Greatest Hits record. I started taking voice lessons at nine years old, and my vocal coach thought I may be tone deaf. I ended up quitting, and a few months later I watched the movie, Burlesque, starring Cher. I started singing Welcome To Burlesque around my living room, and my mom ran in saying I sounded just like Cher. We called my vocal coach and asked her to listen to me sing it, and after hearing it, she said, “We can work with this.” I started back up with vocal lessons and focused mostly on Cher music. For some reason, I could hear the notes in Cher’s music, and I wasn’t struggling as much as I was when I attempted other music before. If it wasn’t for Cher’s music, especially her greatest hits record, I don’t think I would’ve ever learned how to sing. I actually was hired by a Cher Tribute Company when I was eleven as a Mini Cher impersonator!

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER ARTIST?

There are so many great music videos out there! I just released a new music/lyric video for my single, Outta Control, that is on YouTube, Roku, etc! Billie Eilish has some pretty cool music videos! I don’t typically listen to her music, but I’ve seen some of her videos and they are incredibly creative, unique, and well done.

WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?

Making music … LOL! I have a hard time doing things that others consider “fun.” I have this weird guilt thing that happens when I feel like I’m doing something that isn’t at all productive. If I'm not either making music, rehearsing for something, writing, directing, going over lines for upcoming films, etc, I feel guilty for not doing those things … It’s probably bad, and I should probably stop it … LOL … I will say though that my drummer was constantly nagging me saying I needed to chill out once and a while so that I don’t lose my mind, so he and I usually kick it after band practice and watch movies and stuff to wind down.

DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?

Yes! I wouldn’t say I get a bad nervous feeling though. I just get that adrenaline of nerves that I know will go away. I’ve been performing all my life, so I pretty much know exactly how I will operate before a performance. This may be TMI, but I ALWAYS feel like I have to pee before I go on stage … Without fail, it happens every time. But then I get on stage, and I suddenly don't have to go anymore … I guess that is part of the nerve package deal for me. I can’t really say that I “deal” with my nerves. I just know that they will go away once I hit the stage … So I kind of just let it happen and feed off of the nervous energy in a way.

HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?

My current band has been together only for about six or seven months. My drummer, Josh, is actually my former vocal coach's son, and one of my dear, dear friends. I met my guitar player, Eric, through my drummer. They have been really good friends for many years. Originally Josh and I were going to be a duo until we found other members. He then thought of his guitar-playing friend and asked if he wanted to join us. We decided we would just go on as a three member band until we found a bass player, and a few months later, Eric thought of his multi-instrumentalist friend, Greg, to step in as our bass player.

HOW DO YOU WRITE? - DO YOU HAVE A KEY SONGWRITER, OR DO YOU ALL WORK TOGEHTER?

I write all of my own lyrics and melodies, and then I co-write my music. My new unreleased album, Damaged Goods, was co-written by me and Eric Gynan. Usually lyrics will pop into my head at weird and unexpected times. I am that weirdo that will stop right in the middle of doing something to run to a notebook to write lyrics down that minute! There are other times where I’m feeling especially lyrical and I just sit down with my notebook and write.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Life! I write what I know. I don’t have any music out or ready to be released that isn’t based on truth. I’ve attempted to write music about things I haven’t necessarily experienced or felt that I thought could be cool, but I end up hating it. I like to feel what I write and sing. It’s hard to do that if you don’t really know what you’re writing and singing about.

WHAT IS NEXT?

I have some gigs coming up, one in Salem, New Hampshire on August 7th! At the end of this month I am starting to film for a feature film I have been cast in as well! I am gearing up for the upcoming release of my album, Damaged Goods, and I am excited for everything in the foreseeable future! I look forward to whatever the universe brings my way!
