Q & A: TRASH HEADS

We find out more about the Kent alt-rock band

We are Trash Heads, a four piece originals alternative rock band from Kent. We play loud, and write songs that will get stuck in your head.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE?

Our new single ‘Set It Right’ is out this Friday 11th June on our Bandcamp page and on all streaming platforms (Spotify etc). It’s like a Sabbath meets The Beatles song about struggling to stay positive in the current chaotic climate. Taken from our forthcoming album ‘Vandalism’ which is due out in September.

WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM OR SINGLE?

Both the single and album were written before the global pandemic, but a lot of themes are influenced by both the darkness and positivity that we find around us. Of course, the music itself is inspired by our favourite bands and a desire to create our own spin on our influences.

CAN YOU SUM UP THE ALBUM IN A FEW WORDS?

Heavy Melodic Alternative Rock

WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?

AJ (Vocals/Bass) – “Faith No More ‘The Real Thing’. Until then we’d all been listening to the same standard rock and metal like Maiden, Metallica, GNR, but when this album came out it showed you didn’t have to stick to one style and was a massive influence on my songwriting and singing style.”

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER ARTIST?

We’ve got an amazing animated video coming for our single ‘Set It Right’ but it won’t be ready for a couple of weeks due to some technical issues so watch out for that on our social media! At the moment, we have a great home made video for a song from our debut album called ‘Sweet Vitriol’. Entirely made by ourselves using camera trickery, no CGI so we’re super proud of it:

WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?

We all love going to gigs, seeing our favourite bands play whether they are local unsigned or famous. Cinema and live comedy are also passions of the band.

DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?

Not anymore – used to in the early days but we dealt with it with alcohol to start with (!) but now we have lots of gig experience it’s not really a thing we get…

HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?

AJ, Mark and Tone all went to school together (Mick Jagger’s old school, Dartford Grammar!) and started off various bands from there. Having been friends since then, we formed Trash Heads with local drummer Mike while writing our debut album ‘Skyscraper Heartbreaker’ and started playing shows around London and Kent in 2015.

HOW DO YOU WRITE? - DO YOU HAVE A KEY SONGWRITER, OR DO YOU ALL WORK TOGETHER?

AJ starts off most of the songs by demoing up basic drum tracks, bass guitars and vocals and sending it to the rest of the band for comment/approval – once it gets the thumbs up Mark and Tone add guitars to the demo and we all learn our parts before working on the song further in the rehearsal studio with Mike on drums. Songs tend to develop quite a bit in live rehearsal before we try them out at a gig, but everyone gets input and we’re never too precious if a song changes direction from its original demo. Quite often Mark, Tone or Mike will spark a song idea with a riff or a drum pattern in rehearsal which blossoms into a full song, which can be more spontaneous and exciting!

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

We just love to get in a room and play live together – there’s a constant flow of new songwriting (particularly during lockdown!), and we just get a big buzz from playing songs we’re passionate about and want to communicate to the outside world.

WHAT IS NEXT?

We are playing a couple of shows as venues begin to re-open:

Saturday 12th June – Leo’s Red Lion, Gravesend (Kent) with Follow The Hawk

Friday 3rd September – Penny Theatre, Canterbury (Kent) supporting Foo Fighters GB

More shows to be announced with the new album ‘Vandalism; due in September so sign up to our Bandcamp or whatever your social media preferences for updates!
