The German alt rock band talk about their new single 'Gravity'
PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF FOR US WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOU AND YOUR MUSIC AND TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.
We are Five Crumbs, an alternative rock band from Greifswald, Germany. Our style is influenced by all kinds of music genres but mainly by modern rock and metal music. If you like artists like Papa Roach, Shinedown or Linkin Park you should definitely give us a listen! We listen to anything from Imagine Dragons and Red Hot Chili Peppers to Falling in Reverse and System Of A Down. It’s really fun to draw inspirations from so many different styles of music into our own sound. We were founded in 2017 so we’re a pretty new band but we constantly work on new music so you will get to hear a lot more from us in the future.
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE?
There’s a new single called "Gravity“ coming out in August, 28th. The song’s about times when so many things just seem to be good but you can’t feel satisfaction. You drift away by bad actions or habits and need to be careful cause once you lose your ‘Gravity’ and slip it’s most likely you get lost in your own dark thoughts - you might even lose the things or people you love the most. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions both musically and lyrically.
WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM OR SINGLE?
The above mentioned single is part of a new EP coming out this year. It’s inspired by various feelings and situations we have experienced and the songs are really personal to us.
CAN YOU SUM UP THE ALBUM IN A FEW WORDS?
Dark, energetic, self-reflective
WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?
Markus: Meteora by Linkin Park. It’s the first record I ever bought and it totally changed my listening habits being my gateway drug into rock and metal music.
Richard: The Connection by Papa Roach. This used to be my all time favourite for several years. The sound was different from what I used to know from Papa Roach but this one really got me all the way into rock. Every song of this record is so relatable and tells you a story about ups and downs in your life.
Niklas: The Mountain by Three Days Grace - This song significantly affected my life by motivating me to face insecurities and fears I once had. This record gave me an immense amount of strength and helped me to become the person I am today.
Franz: B.Y.O.B. from System of a Down, I heard it back when I was a shy teenager. The power of this song encouraged me to become more confident. Lars: "And the hero will drown" by Story of the Year. This song was a soundtrack in Need for Speed Underground 2 and since then I'm extremely into this style of music.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER ARTIST?
The music video for the song "Hypa Hypa“ by Eskimo Callboy is a really fun one that we all can agree on. Check it out if you haven’t already, the hype is real with that video!
WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?
Markus: Hanging out with friends or playing video games like Fallout 4, Horizon Zero Dawn or The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt. Richard: Probably me hanging out with the boys or some friends. I also enjoy playing video games on the Nintendo Switch every now and then. Also often times you can find me in front of my car thinking about what else I could modify on it.
Niklas: When I´m not making music I´m still listening to it because there's always a melody or beat in my head. You can also find me reading books, mostly of spiritual manner and novels. To clear my head I can be found at the gym as well.
Franz: You would probably find me on huge live action roleplay conventions.
Lars: Similar to Markus, playing video games. But also very often going out and just enjoying nature. We live where others spend their holidays.
DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?
Yes, and we think most (if not all) artists feel so in one way or another. The best way to deal with it is to just get into the song and enjoy the moment. The more energy you give to the crowd, the more you‘ll get in return and you will lose the nervousness automatically.
HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?
In 2017 our lead guitarist Markus started to search for new musicians in Greifswald to form a new rock band. After various member changes the first real line-up for the band came to be in December 2017. Since then we constantly worked on new music and released our first EP
"Fall Awake“ in June 2018.
HOW DO YOU WRITE? - DO YOU HAVE A KEY SONGWRITER, OR DO YOU ALL WORK TOGETHER?
Most of the time Richard and Markus come up with a riff or chord progression and build around it. Then they show it to the other guys and they add their ideas too. When we’re finally satisfied with the instrumental we write lyrics and add the vocals to the song. So yeah, we have two key songwriters but we still do work together when writing songs.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Different experiences, feelings, people, places, events, just life in general shapes our creativity.
WHAT IS NEXT?
We work hard on releasing a new EP and as mentioned above, we will release our new song "Gravity“ on August, 28th. We can’t wait to let you hear it!
