From voodoo to dancing naked around a bonfire, we talk with Franz and Guitarfox from Schultz
PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF FOR US WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOU AND YOUR MUSIC AND TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.
Franz: We are SCHULTZ an industrial metal band from south of France.
Guitarfox : A clever mix of electronic beats, metal guitars and punk inspiration, with a little touch of Voodoo Witchcraft.
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM ?
Franz : We released our new album Black Magic Party the 01 th May, just one year after our last album Shot Of Pain, which was a mix of old and more recent tracks reworked with Guitarfox and Sandy Dynamite. This time we created it all together entirely from A to Z, and I can say this is a fucking killer album ! Available everywhere on digital and CD.
Guitafox : Check it out, it worth it.
WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM ?
Guitarfox : During the great conflagration of the Rainforest in august 2019, I wrote the song Rats In The Sewers. At this time I really thought humanity was over, and from then, we would all be just like super-rats fighting each other for their lives. That was the real kickstarting for the writing of this new album. The satanic theme went after that, Not because we believe in Satan – We don’t ! – but more as a symbol of effective anarchy, not as a utopia. You have to live regretless and relentless if you want to survive in this sick sad world. You have to get rid of that sick thing Nietzsche called the Moraline : all these things society builds around you to keep looking at you and your acts to judge you and make you live in permanent guilt.
CAN YOU SUM UP THE ALBUM IN A FEW WORDS?
Franz : 10 kick ass tracks... 32 minutes of intensive pleasure.
Guitarfox : An album to dance on naked around the bonfire !
WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?
Franz : For me it's Mutter from Rammstein, a real revelation! In my own opinion, I think the musical world has never been the same after this album…. But it's just my opinion. When this album was released it was something so powerful…. And it is always the same thing for me today. This album has changed my life.
Guitarfox : No album in particular, because I grew up with music, so I can’t really tell. My parents used to listen things of their age: Beatles, Rolling Stones, Who, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple… So as a teenager, I rebelled with more heavy stuff: Punk rock, heavy, thrash, black, death, and industrial metal… Classic story !
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER ARTIST?
Franz : "I Hate You" with the WWE wrestler Tom la Ruffa and the female performer VDREY.
It was our first video and we took a lot of pleasure to make it, and to work with so great professional persons.
Guitarfox : No video in particular, I like them all for different reasons. You would not ask a mother which one of her children does she prefer… Same for me !
WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?
Franz : I like to take good time, and as an open minded person, I love to discover new things, there are so much more things to discover in one so short life….
Guitarfox : Reading books, watching movies, walking in the woods, having me a drink… Life is made to be enjoyed, and nothing else… OKAY ?!
DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT ?
Guitarfox : Of course we do ! we've been doing this long enough to know the danger it gets. Generally, I get me one beer or two, and then, F**k everything, I’m here to kill !… Franz, it would make a good title for a new song, don’t you think?
Franz : We do our best on stage and give everything we can. We want to share all this energy we have inside of us with the audience, and it mostly works each time. Sandy is a good partner on stage with lots of passion, energy and power. She never stops moving everywhere on the stage (it gets sometimes small collisions between her and me, but its fun), she‘s a great stage performer ; Guitarfox is looking like more reserved on stage, but he’s a real volcano in fact, but I think it is way more difficult to move with a guitar than with a mic.
HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?
Franz : SCHULTZ started in 2002 as a solo project. It became a duo with the female performer VDREY during several years, and a real band in 2018 when a festival promoter contacted us to open for Clan Of Xymox. I’ve been searching for the best and more friendly musicians I knew around me. Immediately I thought about Guitarfox (Guitar and vocals) and Sandy Dynamite (Live dance performance and vocals), and after that first gig we kept going on this adventure together.
Guitarfox : That’s it. Franz asked us to join him as a backing band for one gig at the Industrial Music Fest in Cannes (French Riviera) in 2017. It was meant to be a one shot, but it went well… So Sandy and I are still in the project today.
HOW DO YOU WRITE? - DO YOU HAVE A KEY SONGWRITER, OR DO YOU ALL
WORK TOGEHTER?
Franz : We have no real process, when a member has an idea, we talk about it together and if everybody agrees, we work on it. Usually, I do the beat and synth parts, but this time I also wrote the lyrics for two tracks: Black out, and Devil Inside Me.
Guitarfox : Franz sends me his instrumentals, I put the guitar parts on it, and if it inspires me some lyrics, let’s go then. In fact we’re just fed by the need to create music and play, as musicians.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Franz : Everything...
Guitarfox : Life and Death… And Sexuality of course !
WHAT IS NEXT?
Franz : We just released our new album Black Magic Party the 01 May, and our new video a few days before. Actually we are promoting all this stuff and trying to book gigs for next year.
Guitarfox : if next year there will be, of course. Times are uncertain… First of all, getting rid of that f***ing virus, so we could play live again !
