Tristan talks about the influence of Nivana on his music and the band's new EP
Tristan: Hi! I’m Tristan Gauthier, singer/guitarist and songwriter for my one year old baby rock band named INDIGO! The band is composed with Alexis Rimbault on drums and Noé Russeil on bass and we are based in Paris, France.
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE?
Tristan: Sure! So we just released an EP named The Distance: part I which is the first part of a full length record. You can find it on every platforms and you will also find us on YouTube with our music video for our first single Like a Seed in the Sand. We had so much fun doing it as I had to go on to sing and stare at the camera while being mistreated by my bandmates. Go find it on YouTube it's really something!
WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM?
Tristan: The whole album project is about resilience I would say. I went through some difficult things in life and as a hypersensitive guy, it affected me a lot. So I tried and still try my best to take distance from toxic things and toxic people so I can find a way to increase my peace of mind.
CAN YOU SUM UP THE ALBUM IN A FEW WORDS?
Tristan: shiny, sensitive, optimistic, pop and honest!
WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?
Tristan: As a kid born in the 80s, Nevermind by Nirvana for sure! I was 9 or 10 when my parents offered me a walkman and my grandparents the Nevermind ’s cassette for Christmas. I remember the scene like it was yesterday! So excited by Christmas, I opened my presents and when I listened to it on the sofa with my purple pyjamas on, I went totally crazy! The music was so powerful and full of sense to me, I got chills on every songs even though I couldn’t understand a word of what Cobain was singing about! After that, even though I was already passionated with music, my life changed!
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER ARTIST?
Tristan: Damn, there are so many..! But, as we are a small band trying to make our way let’s have a look on our music video! The song is called Like a Seed in the Sand and as I told you its very fun to watch! But full of sense too!
WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?
Tristan: When I’m not playing music you can definitely find me into the wild ! Nature has a GREAT impact on me. It calms me down, makes me think about almost nothing, so I can walk for hours listening to the birds through the smell of trees and flowers and, even though some lyrics often comes to my mind while walking, I wouldn’t say that it inspires me a lot. It’s more like an escape from my creative routine so I can later come back at it like, I’ve just purified myself and I’m ready to write again. It’s important to take some breaks if I don't want my head to explode from too much thinking!
DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?
Tristan: Not at all! It’s weird as I’m a little bit of an anxious person but performing live is one of the best thing I like to do in life so I’m more like a lion in a cage ready to rooaarrr!
HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?
Tristan: Well, I met Alexis through a friend. I was looking for a drummer for this new project of mine and he was planning to go to work in Paris. So he ended up by being my drummer and a drum teacher for the music school I manage in Paris! Bingo! Then, after a bad experience with a bass player, Alexis introduced me to his longtime friend Noé and then the band was formed!
HOW DO YOU WRITE? - DO YOU HAVE A KEY SONGWRITER, OR DO YOU ALL WORK
TOGETHER?
Tristan: Well, I always write when I’m moved by something. Then the ideas comes naturally and if it sounds interesting to me I focus on it and try to make a song with it! Then we work on it all together as Alexis and Noé are very talented musicians so they can bring some interesting things to my songs that I wouldn’t have to think of by myself.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Tristan: Well, I’m mostly inspired when I’m sad or angry about something, someone or some old souvenirs that I’m ruminating. The feeling I have on the moment instantly wakes up my creativity and then a song or few might appears right after that. Yeah.. the old romantic cliché of tortured souls!
WHAT IS NEXT?
Tristan: Next step we want to record the second part of the project this summer at our favorite studio Montmartre Recording in Paris (Woodkid, Lily Wood & the Prick etc), do another music video and play a f****** concert!
