Maverick is a punk rawk band, based in Montreal, born out of pure energy and passion. Our modo is Fast and Loud. Of course, we like to vary tempos and songs from time to time, have fun with the inspirations that come to us, but mostly, this is what you get.
We are Eddie (guitar + vocals), Fil (bass + vocals) and Elliott (drums and backing vocals). We all come from different backgrounds of punk (street, rock, hardcore, pop, metal, ska, skate…), which makes it very interesting for us to merge our influences and inspirations together.
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR SINGLE?
Our latest single, The Tower, is a riff I’ve been fooling with for quite sometimes. As the year 2020 has been rough on quite a few, I wasn’t spared. It allowed me to express the situation I was going through, and hopefully, if it can reach a few ears, it might help others in a similar position. I was only able to record it last year though, in 2022. We did it one take, live, in the studio. Raw and straight to the point.
WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM?
Many things inspired the EP Bones Shaker. Each song had its own inspirations and creating process. As far as the sound goes, I’d say the early skate punk years.
CAN YOU SUM UP THE ALBUM IN A FEW WORDS?
Fast and Loud.
WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?
There are so many that had this effect on us, and which we keep coming back to, even after 15 years and 1500 spins. For me (Eddie), the first one that had this major effect, from the very first listen, is RATM self-titled 1992. The simple, honest, raw sound and full charge of pure energy felt like a thunderbolt activating something within my heart. For Elliott, it was Avenged Sevenfold Nightmare that took him on a roller coaster of emotions. In many ways, it was a first for him. A new world had just opened up. And for Fil, it’s the iconic Green Day Dookie album. The first song he ever fell in love with
is on this one: Basket Case. Needless to say, he was hooked.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER ARTIST?
Music videos for us are in the talking stage still. We have many fun ideas, but still busy with the recordings first.
Our answers differ on that one, but we can observe a common thread. Blink 182 What’s my age again? and Beastie Boys Sabotage.
WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?
We love to watch movies, live shows, skate, cook, sports, good conversations with fine people… you know, regular Joe’s stuff.
DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?
Always. But we’re all very down to earth and know that mistakes are inevitable. We do what we can, we make sure to prepare properly. Control the controllable as they say :)
HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?
I officially started bringing in people on the project in 2017. As life works in mysterious ways, in late 2019, I had to continue the journey on my own, until I met Fil and Elliott. We met this year (2023) at the jam space we share. We hit it off from the start and Maverick was up and running again, ready for live appearances.
HOW DO YOU WRITE? - DO YOU HAVE A KEY SONGWRITER, OR DO YOU ALL WORK TOGETHER?
Yes, I do most of the writing. One usually comes with a good structure, and we build around that. Together jamming or when practicing on our own. It all depends on how inspiration comes. Everybody’s quite creative in the band, so whoever has something he feels like sharing and working on, if it fits the sound and we all like it, we add it.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
When it comes to writing, many things inspire us. Personal stories, goofy things, just ventilating or writing from the heart on matters that seem wrong. Really, whatever pops up from within.
WHAT IS NEXT?
Always planning shows ahead and on the lookout for that. Plans for the near future are collab recordings and a new EP of our own.
