This week's round-up: New music from The Commoners, Paul Di’Anno and Black Label Society

The Commoners are pleased to announce the release of their title track single “Restless” available on all streaming platforms from Friday September 13th. The single is taken from their critically acclaimed third studio album Restless which is available from www.thecommoners.ca/store/.

In support of the new single, the Commoners will hit the road for a major tour in November through December ‘24 across Europe and the UK opening for Canadian music heavyweights The Sheepdogs, rounding out the year with a coveted slot at Planet Rockstock Festival on December 1st.

With lead singles “Devil Teasin’ Me,” “The Way I Am” and “Shake You Off” all earning spots on Planet Rock’s main playlist, the band continue to turn heads with their crisp tones, lush productions, and spirited melodies. From the speakers to the stage, one thing is certain: The Commoners are ushering in a party rock renaissance, and we’re all invited.

The Commoners are experiencing great success with the release of their current album, Restless. The album features ten tracks that grip and groove. The band continues to provide listeners with a hearty dose of Southern-style swagger with every guitar slide, organ swell, and vocal stamp.

Says Blues Rock Review, “With Restless, The Commoners have crafted yet another impressive album that is both a tribute to their commitment to reviving a classic era and a step in the direction of solidifying the group as one of the most exciting acts in contemporary rock.”

Riding high off the strength of their second album, Find A Better Way, the last two years have been a whirlwind for the band. From a UK tour with Grammy-nominated duo Samantha Fish and Jesse Dayton in the fall of 2023, to headline dates across Europe and Britain this year, The Commoners are a must-see act.

Possessing a sound tapped from the oaken belly of a whiskey barrel, The Commoners are a five-piece roots rock band from Toronto, Canada. Offering their own blend of a tried-and-true musical mixture, the group pepper their sound with high-energy riffs, soulful vocals, and rich harmonies that combine to take the listener on a journey through a Southern-style rock experience.

The band is a culmination of like-minded musicians who have bonded over their love of the classics. All being seasoned performers in the Canadian music scene, Chris Medhurst (lead vocals/guitar), Ben Spiller (bass/vocals), Ross Hayes Citrullo (lead guitar), Adam Cannon (drums/vocals), and Miles Evans-Branagh (keys/vocals) have united under a shared dream: to write and perform music that is an authentic nod to the greats who paved the way before them.

“The Black Crowes and Led Zeppelin are big influences for us,” says Commoners lead singer, Chris Medhurst. “Derek Trucks, Marcus King, and the Allman Brothers, as well. These are the bands that we wear on our sleeves as we continue to evolve our sound and create our own music.”

Channelling their deep respect and admiration for roots rock trailblazers, The Commoners also incorporate rhythmic stylings inspired by Motown and Soul’s groove masters. The keystone of their unique blend is lead singer, Chris Medhurst’s emotive vocal style, akin to Burton Cummings and Paul Rodgers, with a dash of Sam Cooke and Otis Redding.

A natural evolution from their 2022 album Find A Better Way, Restless offers a peek behind the curtain of success, revealing the grueling routines and ragged emotions that hide behind the glamorous aesthetic of a rock band on the rise. With introspective, slower-tempo numbers pocketed amongst rip-roaring anthems, the new album is a portrait of a hardworking group revitalizing a classic genre.

Former Iron Maiden vocalist and frontman Paul Di’Anno announces release of new album, ‘The Book of The Beast’, via Conquest Music on September 27th 2024.

The vinyl double album (available in Blood Red, Virgin White and Cold Steel coloured vinyl) and 2-disc CD/DVD include five previously unreleased tracks, along with a carefully curated collection of songs that distills many of the best moments from Di’Anno’s fascinating and formidable career.

The CD/DVD also includes rare live, promotional, and acoustic video footage.

Deep cuts from albums going back to Paul’s Battlezone, Killers and Solo days have been painstakingly re-mastered to give them a more up to date and polished production plus some of Paul’s rare acoustic, rehearsal and demo recordings have been added as a special bonus.

Perhaps the most interesting addition to this album is the unexpected reworking of two Iron Maiden classics, but with a dark twist. Both Remember Tomorrow and Wrathchild have been treated to a facelift with Paul duetting alongside Tony Martin (Black Sabbath), ZP Theart (Dragonforce) and Lidya Balaban (Crowley).

“I suppose it might sound like an unusual combination, but Lidya has got a brilliant voice,” Paul enthuses. “I’ve been trying to get it together to see Crowley, but it hasn’t happened yet.”

“I’d be very interested in working on something special with Tony and ZP in the future” Paul adds.

The vinyl albums feature Paul duetting with Lydia Balaban while the The ZP Theart & Tony Martin duets are on CD/DVD and also digital.

Di’Anno is very excited at the possibility of this collection bringing belated attention to many of his songs that may have slipped past the casual listener.

“I’ve never felt that my albums were ever given the promotion they deserved, and record labels just didn’t take me seriously” Di’Anno comments. “The guys at Conquest Music are really on the case so I hope more people will get to hear my music now.”

With an exhaustive CV that includes Battlezone, Killers, Di’Anno (the band), Praying Mantis, The Almighty Inbredz, Warhorse and the metal supergroup Gogmagog, Paul Di’Anno is one of the most colourful and controversial characters in hard rock and heavy metal. But of course, Paul is best known for having been a member of Iron Maiden from 1978 to 1981, appearing on their two iconic albums ‘Iron Maiden’ and ‘Killers’, his voice bringing the band far more of a raw, punky edge than was present on subsequent records.

For that reason, Maiden’s first two albums still inspire strong reactions. Though the band became bigger than ever after his exit, there are fans that stopped liking them when Paul exited the picture. In later years, Di’Anno met members of Metallica, Pantera and Sepultura who all respectfully told him how much those first two LPs had influenced them.

“That’s always bloody brilliant to hear,” he enthuses. “It’s nice to know that you are worth something in the grand scheme of things.

Paul will be touring UK/Europe from 21st August through to mid December 2024.
