WE TALK EMOTIONAL VAMPIRES AND SONGS OF RESILIENCE WITH PAST THE FALL

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF

We’re a 3-piece metal band from Cambridge UK, genre wise I guess we sit well with melodeath/groovy/grungy/prog metal. It's dark and heavy but the songs are very different from one another and put the emphasis on songwriting first.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE?

Our debut Album ‘From Insanity’s Ruin’ is out now, it’s the culmination of all our previous experience touring for several years off the back of a previous EP, and takes in a lot of varying dark interpersonal experiences and conflicts and has a lot of variety- instrumentals, intros, acoustic bits, epic solos mid tempo, thrash elements, it really goes on a journey over the course of the record.

WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM OR SINGLE?

All of it's drawn from our own real-life experience and in many ways ended up being a process of cathartic release. It covers family members' death, loneliness, toxic stalkers, emotional vampires and breakups, into songs of resilience and hope.

CAN YOU SUM UP THE ALBUM IN A FEW WORDS?

Dark, Epic and groovy.

WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?

For me personally, it was nirvana nevermind when I was 11, I wore that record out and it lit a fire under me to explore more and more guitar music throughout my adolescence.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER ARTIST?

I really love trippy and dark storytelling videos, so something like Tool’s ‘Sober’ based on the Quay Brothers stuff is awesome.

WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?

Again speaking for myself- I love to listen to music probably rather obviously! But these days I’m quite clean living and love rock climbing and jujitsu.

DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?

Not really, but definitely excited, but that’s what gives playing live that extra edge I like. The sensations of nerves and excitement are probably the same, but for me perhaps I would be nervous if I hadn’t put the practice/work in to be prepared. I think we all have the courage to live in the moment and do the best we can.

HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?

It's born out of me (Will) and Thomas’s friendship, we’d been in and out of bands for years but eventually we decided to do a project together that was our vision with no compromises.

HOW DO YOU WRITE?

It all comes from initial riff ideas, and then the stringed musical part is built up first, then it goes to the drums, and then we add the vocals in last so they fit the feel of the song. Our style is very methodical stuff rarely comes from any band jams, we just feel we can get to the idea in our heads/hearts better that way.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

I think the fact that music has been such a savior and guiding light in all my experiences good or bad throughout my life keeps the heart alive, and then internally looking out from the lens of the band- all the feedback from the fans humbles me every day and really makes me feel part of something special in our own small way.

WHAT IS NEXT?

We’re in the studio recording new material, and we escape to play Bloodstock Open Air for the first time in August!
